Old Town

The Old Town of the city should be the starting point for those visiting Edinburgh for the first time.

Its historical importance and the preservation of its buildings and landmarks were some of the reasons why it was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1995.

In one end you will find the Edinburgh Castle and the beginning of Old Town main street, the Royal Mile, which leads all the way down to Holyrood Abbey. Narrow closes, often no more than a few feet wide, lead downhill on either side of the Royal Mile.

Places of interest in Old Town include the St Gile’s Cathedral, the City Chambers, the Scottish Parliament Building, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the National Museum of Scotland, Surgeons’ Hall, the University of Edinburgh, and numerous underground streets and vaults.

What our guests say about it:

“We booked the flat at very short notice. Edinburgh flats made everything so simple for us – they were lovely. John met us and gave us tips on the area. The flat was perfectly situated, very quiet, but very central (guessed 5 mins walk to the castle – view from window. Theaters, restaurants, “real” shops, etc. right there). The friendly owner of the small shop nextdoor (lovely sandwiches & also runs taxis) is very helpful, too. The view of the castle from the bedrooms has imprinted itself on my brain. We will certainly stay in Edinburgh again! ”
