Celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the remarkable reign of Queen Elizabeth II, who was proclaimed queen when she was only 25 years old. What most people don’t know is that her public service started before that when she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women’s branch of the British Army during the Second World War.

The first major event is The Diamond Jubilee Pageant which will take place in the private grounds of Windsor Castle on the evenings of 10th, 11th and 13th May 2012. It’ll mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the presence of Her Majesty. Dancers, musicians, military and equestrian displays from around the world will take part in this tribute to the Queen and her 60-year reign. Tickets are sold online in advance. For more information, visit the Diamond Jubilee Pageant’s website.

Most of the celebrations will centre on the first weekend of June in London. On Sunday June 3rd, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant promises to be one of the most impressive celebrations ever to happen on the River Thames, with a flotilla of around a thousand boats covered with flags and beautiful commemorative adornments. The armed forces, fire, police, rescue and other services will be all represented there. There will be also historic boats, wooden launches, steam vessels and other boats of note. Music barges, boats spouting geysers and pyrotechnic barges spitting smoke and daytime fireworks will make the celebrations all that more special.

Thames piers, riverside roads and bridges will be closed to traffic allowing the members of the public access to see and enjoy the pageant, there will be also up to fifty big screens distributed along the route.

A visit to Scotland is in the Royal Family celebrations program. They will come from July 2nd to 6th during the period when the Holyrood Week takes place. Holyrood Week is a yearly event that includes traditional engagements such as the Ceremony of the Keys and an Investiture and Garden Party both at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

The Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated not only in the UK but also throughout the commonwealth countries. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, supported by other members of the Royal Family, will be travelling as widely as possible across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. For the visits overseas, members of the Royal Family will be representing the Queen during the period of celebrations.

We will keep you update about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee visit to Edinburgh so you don’t miss any moment of this historical celebration!
