On the east end of Princes Street is Calton Hill home to the famous National Monument with its columns modelled upon the Parthenon in Athens. It’s an unfinished monument from 1826 which is included in the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are other buildings and monuments on the top of this famous hill but what impresses most visitors is its beautiful views over the city and across to the Firth of Forth.

The West End is an upmarket area in the west of New Town where most of the consulates and embassies are located. There you will find the very best contemporary, independent and stylish boutiques as well as excellent restaurants, pubs and bars.
It’s a much loved place for the locals who enjoy the trendy atmosphere of the area.
Next to the West End is Dean Village, a picturesque and peaceful neighbourhood by the Water of Leith. It’s worth a visit! It feels like stepping back in time with its 17th century houses and bridge. Explore the area by walking on the path by the river.

If you take a little time planning in advance it will save you lots of time here! When you arrive at Edinburgh airport or one of Edinburgh’s train stations (Haymarket and Waverley), just pick up a free map.
The Royal Mile is the most famous street in Edinburgh and must be your start point. You will become very familiar with it since it’s very likely you will go up and down this mile more than once during your visit.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery re-opens on December 1st after a major refurbishment which aims were to restore its magnificent building, provide new visitor services and expand the number of works of art.
Changes on the way the collection is displayed will bring to visitors the opportunity of appreciating art while learning the different historical contexts of each portrait. It will also bring more information about the sitters and artists.
