Scottish Restaurants in Edinburgh

Scottish dining in Edinburgh is getting very popular.  Many of the restaurants on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile host menus specialising in Scottish dishes made with locally-sourced produce.  Scottish food is not only haggis: we are famous for smoked salmon, wild game, Aberdeen Angus beef, and a rich and varied harvest of seafood and seasonal fruit & vegetables.

It is strongly recommended that you reserve a table for any of the restaurants noted in this list, as they are all popular choices for locals and visitors.  So plan ahead – particularly in high season – but do go, as it will be worth the ‘tartan foodie’ experience.

Here are some of the best known (and not so well advertised) Scottish restaurants in Edinburgh…

Dubh Prais

The address is on the ‘high street’, but the High Street is also the ‘Royal Mile’ .  Locals in Edinburgh will most probably refer to an address as the ‘High Street’.  This Dubh Prais is found on the Royal Mile, and located down a set of stairs.  You will see from the many reveiws that the surroundings are not posh, and the ceilings are very low.  This is an accurate description of many ‘Old Town’ properties.  But the reviews all agree on the fact that both the  food and the service is excellent.  So prepare yourself for a most enjoyable evening.

The Witchery

Castlehill, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh EH1 2NF
0131 225 5613

One of the most infamous Edinburgh Restaurants.  It is definitely for a special occassion.  This restaurant has had the reputation of being one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh.  Although there are many diners that would now dispute this comment.  As Edinburgh, now, has a host of top restaurants that can easily compete with dining at this price.  However, this is located on the historic Royal Mile, and just next to the castle.  Not many restaurants can compete with this location.

Whisky and dining for a Scottish Experience is possibly at its best at Amber Restaurant.  This restaurant is connected with the Scottish Whisky Experience, and is located just next to the castle, even closer than The Witchery.  The restaurant has a menu that highlights the best of Scottish Food and Produce.  There is also a Whisky Tasting Collection Menu.  The waiter can also suggest a whisky that could go along with the food that you would like to order.   There is both a daytime and dinner menu available.

You can also combine a Whisky Tasting Tour at the Scottish Whisky Experience, with a 3 course dinner at Amber.  What a wonderful way to enjoy Scottish Food along with our national drink.

Relatively new to the restaurants on the Royal Mile, but great Scottish Food, in a lovely and warm atmosphere.  Monteiths is located at the lower end of the Royal Mile, and found down a close just off of the Royal Mile.  You will need to walk down a few stairs to get to this restaurant.  There is a small bar (including cocktails), cosy atmosphere, and an outside area for eating and drinking when the weather allows for it.

Scran and Scalliel

1 Comely Bank Rd, Edinburgh EH4 1DT
0131 332 6281

– one of the newer of the Scottish Restaurants, the Scran and Scallie is located in the neighbourhood of Stockbridge.  This restaurant is part of the Tom Kitchen Family (of michelin star fame), and is a favourite of many of the locals in Stockbridge.  The Scran and Scally only reserves 50% of its tables, so you have a  great chance of popping in and getting a table, although be prepared to wait an hour.  There is a bar where you can relax while waiting for a table to become available.
